Snowshoeing
There are many alternatives to skiing and snowboarding in the winter at Vail or Beaver Creek, Colorado. One of the most popular is snowshoeing.
Snowshoeing is basically just like hiking with tennis racquet-like shoes on your feet. One of the most rewarding aspects of snowshoeing in the area is that you can access terrain that you might no be able to get to otherwise. With an impressive trail network in place which includes both backcountry trails and flat tracks, the snowshoeing here is fun for the whole family and inviting to all skill levels.
With three premiere Nordic and snowshoeing centers located in the area there is plenty of terrain and a variety of training you can get without going far. The Nordic centers at Golden Peak and the Vail Golf Course offer everything from lessons, tours and rentals. The Vail cross county school also offers snowshoeing lessons. The school also runs guided backcountry tours on 40 trails in the White River National Forest. The golf course offers 17-k of groomed trails, making it a great place for beginners to hone their skills. Located at the top of the Strawberry Park Express Lift at Beaver Creek is the McCoy Park Cross Country and Snowshoe Center. The intricate trail system here provides 32-k of groomed tracks at 9,840 feet.
