Snowshoeing

Both non-skiers and those with ski-weary legs will love snowshoeing's inherent quiet and gentle, enjoyable pace, perfect for exploring Vail's mountainous winter wonderland.

Local Listings:

  • Vail moonlight snowshoe tours leave about eight times a year, so call or check online for dates and reservations.
  • From late December through March, Beaver Creek hosts family snowshoe tours at McCoy Park every Tuesday. Hot cocoa is a given.
  • Ski and outdoor shops rent snowshoes for about $17 a day.
  • Dress in several light layers and bring plenty of water, sunscreen and food.

Overview

Vail snowshoeing trails access pristine snow-covered peaks and meadows. Tours leave from both resorts and ample backcountry trails make planning do-it-yourself trips easy.

Where to go

Vail
Vail offers snowshoe tours and rentals at Nature Discovery Center at Eagle's Nest and Golden Peak Nordic Center. Tours leave twice daily from Golden Peak and twice weekly from Eagle's Nest.

Beaver Creek
Go to McCoy Park at the top of Strawberry Park Express Lift. This area has 32 km of trails, along with rentals, lessons and tours.

Backcountry
Numerous trails are suitable for snowshoeing on Vail Pass east of Vail Mountain and in the Gore Range on the north side of Interstate 70. Trail maps available at local shops.

Rentals & Fees

Available at many ski and outdoor shops, daily snowshoe rentals cost $17.
