Skiing

There is only one Vail. It is loved and known worldwide by those passionate about skiing. This American resort has it all.

Behind the Scenes

Vail is the largest ski mountain in the United States. Above the winding lanes of Vail village and its chalets, the mountain rises gently and demurely to an elevation of 11,570 feet. From the crest of the cone- shaped mountain ridge, skiers find why Vail consistently earns the distinction of top ski destination in the world. Fanning out from the mountain is a vast and seemingly boundless string of backcountry bowls, with 3,012 skiable acres with a 350 inch snow pack, replenished throughout the season with new blankets of fine powder. The skier is in his domain. Far below is the natural entrance to this mystical mountain through the Vail Valley and from north to northwest the panoramic vista of the blue and purple majesty of the Rocky Mountains. Lifts transport to most of the wide open expanses. Some of the terrain is accessed only on foot! Even with the desirable snowfall, the sun greets the beloved high country nearly every day. Vail is the songwriter’s winter wonderland.

Basin Blues and Rough and Tumble

Blue Sky Basin adds skiing the native way, with trails of steep (1,901 vertical feet) take-it- as- it- is- terrain. After traversing through tree skiing at the higher elevations, the skier turns through the large mountain meadowlands high in the Rockies, through patches of Buffalo grass and the sentinel groves of silvery winter Aspens. Grooming is only done to keep the 645 acres passable and unforgettable in the hearts of the skiers; the set of the sun and call of the hawk will signal the skier’s return to the Tyrolean village of Vail. The villagers will know you have skied the Rockies!
