Enveloped by national forest lands, the Vail Valley offers nearly unlimited hiking and backpacking opportunities, from short excursions to serious and committing backcountry journeys. From pristine waterfalls to wide open spaces to wildflowers, taking trips into the wilderness is always an undertaking. First off, safety is the primary key. Safer travel in the backcountry almost always insures a better time spent exploring. Also, having map reading skills, the proper attire and knowledge of the area you will be traveling in are all important ingredients when hiking and backpacking. Most popular trails are located in White River National Forest, which is a big place with a lot of cool attractions. The national forest also offers superb camping with numerous campgrounds located in the forest's two million-plus acres. Backcountry camping is also available in the Holy Cross and Eagles Nest wilderness areas.
Local bookstores and mountaineering shops carry books and hiking guides that discuss specific routes in detail. For more information, advice and maps stop by the Holy Cross Ranger District Office in downtown Vail. You can also get information from White River National Forest Headquarters.
