Vail Village Area
The Vail Valley was first explored by gold and silver miners in the
late 19th century. It was then known as Gore Creek Valley. As time went
on, each community was developed into its own unique way.
Vail was named after state highway engineer Charlie Vail. It's quite a
beginning, actually, because Vail started as an idea: that a special
place could be found where people would find enjoyment in sharing their
passion for skiing and the outdoors. This dream became a reality in
1962 after a handful of visionaries took a risk and opened Vail ski
resort. Vail eventually grew to become the largest ski area in North
America!

The ski town began with three lifts: a Gondola at the base of the
mountain, a chairlift from Mid-Vail to the top, and another chair lift
that dropped off into the back bowls. By 1969, Vail was the most
popular resort in Colorado. The Lionshead Gondola and the Village lift,
were both added due to the new found popularity of the mountain. By
1970, Vail was by far the best mountain to ski. Indeed, the season from
1962 to 1963, recorded over 55,000 skiers skiing Vail mountain. Now,
more than 40 years later, Vail continues to reign as a place that
inspires, challenges and comforts us with its natural beauty and alpine
experiences. And, Vail Village is continuing the tradition of being the
world's premier mountain resort community with the revitalization of
amenities and infrastructure.
