During the summer, you can take your family to an
authentic rodeo. Rodeos are hosted every week from late-June
through August, and children usually get in free. You will enjoy
cattle roping, barrel racing, and bucking broncos.
The summer is also an excellent time to visit the
Betty Ford Alpine Gardens. Sitting at an elevation 8,200 feet, it
is known as the highest botanical garden in the world. You can
pleasantly stroll among the several different gardens which bear
perennial and alpine flora. The children's garden, the newest
addition, bears an impressive 120-ft waterfall. The garden was
named after the former first lady who was a frequent visitor to
Vail. There is no entrance fee although a small donation is
appreciated.
After a hard day on the slopes, a visit to The
Colorado Ski Museum and Ski Hall of Fame might answer any questions or
curiosities you have about the history and development of skiing in
Colorado. Here you'll find thousands of artifacts ranging from
clothing to ski equipment that traces the evolution of over a hundred
years of Colorado skiing.
For outdoor sightseeing, you can take a drive up
Shrine Pass Road to its summit of 11,000 feet. Open only in the summer,
you'll be rewarded with fantastic views of the Colorado Rockies.
You can also visit the Vail Nature Center which provides hiking trails
in the summer and crosscountry ski trails in the winter. Special
programs are offered in the summer and winter with guided tours and
activities for the kids.
