Backcountry skiing is a popular winter pastime for
both Vail locals as well as visitors who like to escape the hustle and
bustle of resort skiing. However, backcountry skiing can be very
dangerous. Avalanche safety knowledge is crucial, as is knowing
how to properly use safety gear such as transceivers, shovels, and
probes. Avalanche safety classes are offered, as are guided
trips. Guided ski trips are recommended for anyone who is not
familiar with the backcountry of Vail's many peaks.
Overnight guided hut trips are becoming increasingly
popular with adventurous skiers. Guides take you on multi
day-long ski, snowshoe, or snowmobile tours that end each evening at a
secluded hut where dinner is provided. There are 24 huts in the
Vail, Beaver Creek, Aspen, and Leadville area that provide seasonal
service to winter travelers.
Dog sledding and snowmobiling are also popular
backcountry activities. Dog sledding provides a unique adventure,
while snowmobiling allows access to deep backcountry areas that are
difficult to reach by foot or on skis.
During the summer, there are several companies that
offer whitewater rafting, fly-fishing, horseback riding and hiking
trips. If you are into several activities, some businesses offer
combination trips of rafting and fishing, horseback riding and fishing,
or horseback riding and rafting. Some outfitters offer overnight
pack trips or float trips which allow you access to lesser traveled
backcountry areas.
As for backcountry gear, certain adventure companies
will provide them for you, while others will expect you to bring your
own or rent gear. Snowmobiling tours will usually provide
everything from the snow machine to helmets, goggles, boots, and
coveralls. Guided ski tours usually expect you to provide your
own skis and winter clothing, although most companies have gear
available to rent.
In the backcountry, remember that you are in the
wilderness. Abide by all safety rules and be prepared for any
sort of weather. Bring layers of clothing and plenty of water and
food.
