Eagle River
Colorado Vail's Eagle River has a unique setting. Indeed, there's a
story that unfolds like so: a fly-fishing guide sustained a 6-inch cut
on his forearm, just above the wrist, while guiding once. He was on a
bridge spotting fish for his client, and an out-of-control skier ran
over him. It took a bunch of stitches to sew the guide back together.
That's not a story you're likely to hear on many trout streams, but it
illustrates how the great fishing on Colorado's Eagle River is
intertwined with the state's most popular ski resort community. The
high-mountain snowpack that provides moguls and powder for skiers
creates a cold, clear wild-trout fishery with good fishing year-round.

Colorado's Eagle River is unlike its western counter-parts in that it
is not dam controlled. Therefore, the Eagle River demonstrates the
classic mood swings of spring; raging levels from snow melt spills from
the Divide in early June and then mellowing in mid to late summer.
Also, it's whitewater at its best. Vail has a variety of whitewater
rafting opportunities ranging from mild to wild. The Eagle offers
exciting raft trips, just off Interstate 70 at the town of Wolcott. The
Eagle River flows by colorful canyons of red, yellow, and pale brown
sandstone dotted with pinon and juniper woodlands, and verdant
cottonwood groves along the river's edge.
