Government
Vail was founded as a ski resort in 1962, incorporated as a town in 1966 and became a Home Rule Charter in 1972. Vail has a council-manage form of government and is led by a 7-member town council elected-at-large. Mayor Rod Slifer, along with the 6 remaining council members manage a $34 million annual budget which provide essential services such as police and fire protection, plus additional amenities such as the largest free transportation system in the country, which reduces pollution and traffic congestion year-round.
The Town of Avon is a hub for locals and tourists alike, positioned at
the base of Beaver Creek Ski Resort and next to Vail Summer and Ski
Resort. Avon grew from a sleepy town of 1,300 in the mid-1980s to
5,800 full-time residents in 2003. The town can nearly double in
size during winter and summer months at the peak of the tourist
season. Mayor Ron Wolfe along with 6 remaining council
members work to service the communities of Avon and the Beaver Creek
Village. This council managed government is to provide
leadership, service, and regulations necessary to promote a quality
lifestyle along with a positive economic climate for the business
community and encourage the tourism industry in providing the best
quality in service.
Each town's government work alongside with the town attorney, the town
clerk, and the residents, local business people, member of the Town
Council and others who take an active interest, and who reside on the
town's boards and commissions. As volunteers, these residents
contribute many hours to improve each community's quality of life.
With world-renowned ski resorts, diverse shops and restaurants,
luxurious accommodations, friendly neighborhoods and breath-taking
mountain views, Vail and Beaver Creek are among the finest resort
destinations in the world. As growth continues and more
development is inevitable, the working elected officials of the town's
council government have taken on very large decision making positions,
a crucial part of the future communities of these mountain towns.
